QS World University Ranking

QS Ltd. publishes this yearly list which bases its scores on a mix of surveys and quantitative data. Prior to 2010, the list was a joint venture with Times Higher Education (THE). The publication data comes from Scopus.

About the list

QS World University Ranking is broader and more current than for example the Shanghai list. Half of the indicators are based on surveys and the other half quantitative data. Universities with broad educational offerings normally score higher than specialized ones.

QS World University Rankings by Subject

Since 2011, QS also publishes subject specific rankings. These rankings include four indicators: Academic reputation, Employer reputation and Citations per publication and h-index. The percentages between the various subjects vary. Chemistry and Physics can consist of following 40/20/20/20%, whereas within the fields of the technology the combination of 40/30/15/15% is common. The method for the 2012 ranking changed, so it is difficult to compare to the previous year’s result. The subject specific rankings are published in the spring, but are based on data collected for the broader list collected in autumn.
