Borrowing
Chalmers is a public library where everybody is welcome. However, some of our facilities are only available to students and staff of Chalmers.
Library account
You will need to create a library account and accept the library terms of use to be able to borrow and reserve printed materials. You can start reserving books as soon as you have created your account.
If you are under 18 years of age you will need written permission from your parent or legal guardian to get an account at Chalmers library.
Parent or legal guardian's consent form
You are welcome to use our premises and borrow books, read journals and make digital copies even if you are not a student or staff member of Chalmers. You will need to show a valid photo-ID the first time you borrow something to finalise your registration.
You can log into your library account to renew your loans and manage reservations.
The library uses the company EBSCO’s search services, so the first time you reserve a book or log in to renew your loans you will be asked to approve the creation of a personal MyEBSCO account. If you do not wish to create a personal account, then the library staff will help you reserve and renew material.
PIN code
You can change your PIN code yourself if you have forgotten it.
Loan period
The principal rule when you borrow a book is that you are guaranteed a loan period of 14 days. If nobody else requests the book you have borrowed, then you can keep it for up to 90 days without needing to renew your loan. You may then renew the book for an additional 90 days.
If another borrower reserves the same book after your guaranteed 14 days have passed, the library will send you an email notifying you of the new, shorter return date. You must then be able to return the book to the library at short notice.
Please note that there are different loan periods for different kinds of material and that loan periods may vary according to the material’s condition or format. Reference works, publications over 100 years old, unique material and handwritten manuscripts may only be read in the library and are not available for borrowing outside the library premises.
Reserves and requests
If the book you want has been borrowed, you can put yourself in the queue for it by making a reservation. You will get an email when the book becomes available to borrow. The book remains on the reservations shelf for you for 5 days, and the last day for collection will be written in the email.
You are welcome to place a request if the library does not have the material you are looking for.
Access to e-resources
It is easy to access the library’s e-resources both on and off-campus if you have a Chalmers ID. If you are neither a student nor member of staff at Chalmers, you can only use the e-resources onsite at the library.
