Research funders’ requirements
Research funders may require that research results be made accessible and reusable. These requirements can apply to both publications and research data.
What do these requirements entail?
Funders' requirements for open access publishing mean that you must publish your research results openly—either in an open access journal or by parallel publishing (often the manuscript version) in an open repository. The requirements may also include publishing under an open license.
In the database Open Policy Finder you can see what requirements major research funders have regarding open access publishing.
Data Management Plan requirements
Many funders require that research data be published and that a data management plan be established. This ensures proper data handling and that data can be reused after the project ends.
Note that Chalmers' governing document Guiding principle for good research practice states that all research activities at Chalmers shall have a data management plan, and that all research published by Chalmers researchers must be made available in the Chalmers research portal (research.chalmers.se).
As an employee at Chalmers University of Technology, you have access to the tool Data Stewardship Wizard (DSW). In DSW, you can easily create a data management plan using a question-based template. For further guidance and support regarding research data management, see the Chalmers Data Office page.
Embargo period limitations
Funders often require that your published results be made freely available within a certain timeframe, unless you publish directly in an open access journal.
Publishers, in turn, may specify an embargo period in their terms. During the embargo period, you are not allowed to parallel publish, which delays when your research results can be made freely available.
Therefore, make sure your funder's requirements do not conflict with the terms of the publisher you intend to publish with.
Research funding support
Chalmers has agreements with several publishers regarding open access publishing, allowing Chalmers researchers to publish at no cost or at a discounted rate. See our agreements and search for a suitable journal to publish with via the Library’s page Publish Open Access.
For more information on support for applying for funding, see the Chalmers Grants Office pages Swedish Research Funding and Research funding from the EU.
Overview of requirements by common funders
In the linked document you will find an overview of requirements. The library updates the table annually, but requirements may change over time. Therefore, always check the current requirements with your funder. Some funders specify requirements in Swedish only.
